FOUR New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed while two soldiers were injured in a firefight in Himamaylan City in Negros Occidental last Wednesday, the military reported yesterday.
Troops from the Army’s 94th Infantry Battalion conducted a combat operation in Barangay Carabalan after receiving information about the presence of NPA rebels conducting extortion activities in the area.
“Responding to information from residents, the soldiers conducted combat operations against the communist terrorists who were extorting food and supplies in Barangay Carabalan,” said Col. Jorry Baclor, chief of the AFP’s Public Affairs Office.
The encounter between the soldiers and about 20 NPA rebels broke out at around 6:20 a.m. and lasted for about 20 minutes, said Lt. Col. Vicel Jan Garsuta, spokesman of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (ID).
After the encounter, troops recovered at the scene the bodies of four NPA rebels whose identities are still being ascertained.
