The number of deaths rose to 4,371 fatalities, with Western Visayas reporting 17 deaths, Central Visayas 12, and Calabarzon 10.

The DOH had attributed the high number of recoveries to its “Oplan Recovery,” a program that monitors the status of confirmed COVID-19 cases with mild symptoms and are asymptomatic.

“Oplan Recovery” uses the time-based recovery system, where patients who have completed the 14-day isolation period and are cleared by a physician are tagged as having recovered despite not undergoing repeat RT-PCR testing.

Globally, as of September 12, there were 28,329,790 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 911,877 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said no overseas Filipino was reported by its embassies and consulates to have been infected with the deadly COVID-19 virus yesterday.

As of Saturday, the number of overseas Filipinos infected with COVID-19 since its outbreak has reached 10,181 in 76 countries.

The DFA also reported no deaths among overseas Filipinos. In all, 768 overseas Filipinos have succumbed to COVID-19 as of Saturday.

Two new recoveries were reported, bringing the total number of recoveries to 6,433.

The Middle East and African regions still had the highest number of cases and deaths among members of the overseas Filipino community with 7,002 and 487, respectively, followed by the Asia Pacific region with 1,205 cases, Europe with 1,169 cases, and 805 in the Americas.

In terms of deaths, the Americas came in behind the Middle East and African regions with 178, followed by Europe with 95 and 8 in the Asia Pacific region.

The DFA also reported that Nigeria has imposed new restrictions on travelers entering the country.

It said that since September 5, Nigeria has required all travelers to present a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test at the country of departure and the test must have been done within 96 hours before departure, or preferably within 72 hours.

In his homily during an online Sunday Mass, Manila Cathedral Rector Fr. Regie Malicdem advised the faithful looking to provide Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle assistance as he battles CoVID-19 to instead help others in need.

Malicdem, the former secretary of Tagle when he served as Manila archbishop, said: “With the deluge of medicines and vitamins offered to the Cardinal, we can gather them for those in need.

“If only the Cardinal would know about this, he will say ‘give them to those in need.’ There are many others, who are in need, starting with our own neighbors,” he said.

Malicdem said he has received calls and messages from the faithful asking for an update on Tagle since reports came out that he is positive of COVID-19. He said they offered to give food, fruits, vitamins, medicines, medical professionals, and even hospital beds to Tagle as he completes his 14-day mandatory quarantine.

“There are even doctors and hospitals calling, asking, and offering their services to the Cardinal, saying they are ready to answer to his needs,” added Malicdem. — With Ashzel Hachero
