INTERIOR Secretary Eduardo Año yesterday said 305 personnel from the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology are temporarily deployed at the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City to assist the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) in performing custodial functions until it finishes revamp and clean-up operations at the national penitentiary.

Last Friday, new BuCor chief Gerald Bantag relieved at least 300 BuCor officers allegedly involved in irregularities, pending investigation as part of President Duterte’s directive to revamp the bureau.

Bantag then requested for augmentation forces from Año to secure the facility while BuCor is in the process of ridding the facility of illegal activities like illegal drugs trade.

Año said that of the 305 deployed, 110 are from the BJMP, which includes 24 officers from its elite Special Tactics and Response Team, while 195 are from the Special Action Forces.

“We will continue to extend the much needed help within our capabilities to ensure maximum security while investigations in the bureau are ongoing and the regular Corrections officers are on floating status,” Año said.

Meanwhile, a liaison office composed of the PNP, National Bureau of Investigation-NCR, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-NCR, and the Armed Forces’ Joint Task Force NCR is now installed in the BuCor.

It will provide intelligence gathering and coordination to suppress drug operations and crime inside the facility and to ensure that deployed police and jail officers will not be corrupted while inside the NBP.
