THIRTY persons, including 19 government security personnel, were injured in an explosion caused by firecrackers they were trying to destroy in Zamboanga City last Monday afternoon.

The Zamboanga City government said the injured included six policemen, five Marines, five firemen, and three Coast Guard personnel.

The 11 other victims were civilians, the city government said, citing information from its disaster risk reduction and management office.

It said two of the victims were in a “life-threatening situation” as of Monday night.

The PNP said 27 were injured in the incident — six uniformed personnel and seven civilians.

Police said the incident occurred at 5:35 p.m. in Zone 2, Barangay Cabatangan where authorities were about to destroy the firecrackers.

The firecrackers were recovered from a Zamboanga City fireworks warehouse that was hit by an explosion last June 19, killing five people and injuring 38 others.

The Zamboanga City police said last Monday’s explosion was caused by “premature detonation.” It said the blast also damaged four vehicles.

“Regrettably, the disposal process resulted in an explosion,” the Zamboanga Peninsula regional police office said.

It assured the public that “we are taking this matter seriously and will take all necessary actions to address the incident.

“We want to inform the public that the situation is under control and that we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved,” it added.
