BATANES, Babuyan Islands, and the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan province were placed yesterday under signal No. 1 as a tropical depression earlier monitored off Tuguegarao City in Cagayan intensified into a tropical depression and was named “Carina.”
These areas will experience wind speed of up to 55 kph and moderate to heavy rains, said weather specialist Benison Estareja.
Carina is projected to weaken into a low pressure area by Wednesday.
As of 4 p.m. yesterday, the center of the tropical depression was some 165 km east of Aparri, Cagayan, PAGASA said. Carina was moving west northwest at 15 kph, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.
Carina is forecast to be some 50 km west of Basco, Batanes this afternoon and 340 km north of Basco on Wednesday afternoon.
PAGASA said there will be widespread moderate to heavy rains in Cagayan, including Babuyan Islands, and in Isabela, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, and Ilocos Norte, while scattered light to moderate with at times heavy rains will be experienced in Central Luzon and the rest of Northern Luzon.
