A LOW pressure off Cagayan intensified into a tropical depression yesterday and was named “Florita” which was forecast to make landfall on Tuesday.

Three areas were placed under signal No. 1. These are the northern portion of Aurora, eastern portion of Isabela, and eastern portion of Cagayan, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in a bulletin issued at 5 p.m. yesterday.

PAGASA said these areas will experience strong winds or “strong breeze to near gale conditions.”

As of 4 p.m. yesterday, Florita was some 540 km east of Tuguegarao City in Cagayan. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph, and moving west southwestward at 25 kph.

PAGASA said Florita is expected to bring light to moderate with at times heavy rains in Cagayan, Isabela, Batanes, and Aurora this morning or this afternoon.

“By tomorrow (Monday) evening through Tuesday evening, heavy to intense with at times torrential rains over Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Ilocos region. Light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Central Luzon and the rest of Cagayan Valley (during the period),” PAGASA said.

It said Florita was expected to decelerate within 12 hours from 5 p.m yesterday, before turning westward this morning and west northwestward on Tuesday towards northern Luzon.

”On the forecast track, the center of this tropical cyclone is forecast to make landfall in the vicinity of Cagayan or northern portion of Isabela on Tuesday morning or afternoon,” PAGASA said.

“Afterwards, the center of Florita will move west northwestward and cross several provinces in Northern Luzon before emerging over the West Philippine Sea by Wednesday early morning,” it added.

It said Florita is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm this morning or this afternoon and may reach its peak intensity of 75 kph prior to landfall.

“Slight weakening is likely as it crosses northern Luzon, but it is forecast to remain within the tropical storm category,” PAGASA also said.
