THE National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) yesterday reported a second fatality from tropical storm “Dodong” which exited the country last Saturday.
The NDRRMC said the second died in a rain-induced landslide in Vista Grande in Barangay Sta Cruz, Antipolo City in Rizal on Sunday night. The landslide also caused the evacuation of 14 households, it said.
The first fatality reported by NDRRMC was also from Antipolo City and a victim of a landslide in Barangay San Luis last Saturday.
Meanwhile, the number of residents affected by Dodong in five regions — Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Western Visayas — rose to 24,008 families or 85,584 individuals.
Of the number, 2,977 families or 11,943 individuals have been displaced. As of yesterday, the number was down to 2,178 families or 9,059 individuals.
Some P1.06 million worth assistance, mostly family food packs, has been provided to those affected, the NDRRMC said.
The agency placed the initial cost of damage to agriculture at P6.16 million in Central Luzon alone.
Dodong has also damaged or destroyed 96 houses in Ilocos, Calabarzon and Western Visayas, the NDRRMC also said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is monitoring a low pressure area, which may develop into a tropical depression late Wednesday or today, off Surigao del Sur.
As of yesterday morning, the LPA was some 710 km east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, PAGASA said.
If it develops into a tropical depression, it will be named “Egay” and will be the country’s fifth tropical cyclone this year.
