THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is projecting two million Filipinos to register as voters in time for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to be held in October next year.
In an interview, Elections spokesman John Rex Laudiangco said: “That is the minimum initial assessment based on the last voter registration in July, where we had 3 million new applications.”
He said the 2 million projection includes one million regular and one million youth voters.
To recall, there were 2,936,979 new registrants nationwide during the July 4 to 23 registration period.
Yesterday, the voter registration period for the October 2023 polls opened nationwide and will run until January 31, 2023.
Laudiangco said the first day of voter registration saw a good turnout. “We have a good turnout in municipalities and cities with bigger population. We hope this trend will continue,” he said. — Gerard Naval
