MAKATI Mayor Abegail Binay yesterday said each of the city’s 23 barangays will get P10 million in funding this year following the exclusion of the 10 “EMBO” barangays which are now under the jurisdiction of Taguig City.

“The exclusion of the 10 EMBO barangays has resulted in bigger allocations for each of the remaining 23 barangays from the city’s basic real property tax, or RPT collections, and the national tax allotment,” Binay said in a statement.

She said the final national tax allotment provided by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to the city was P315,962,935, or an increase of P18.4 million from the previous year’s allotment.

Binay said each barangay will get P10.8 million from the national tax allotment (NTA) and the RPT.

The NTA replaced the previous Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA), which is distributed among local government units across the country.

On the other hand, under the 1991 Local Government Code, 70 percent of RPT collections will go to the city’s general funds, while the remaining 30 percent will go to the barangays where the properties are located.

Binay said the 10 EMBO barangays contributed around one percent of Makati’s total RPT collections, while the 23 barangays collected the remaining 99 percent.

With the additional funds, Binay reminded barangay officials to use the money wisely for the benefits of their constituents.

“I am exhorting all barangay leaders in the city to ensure that these added resources will be optimized for high-impact, innovative programs and services aligned with Makati’s vision of an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future,” she said.

To recall, the High Court has affirmed with finality last September 28, 2022 its December 1, 2021 ruling declaring that the 10 EMBO barangays in Makati are part of the territory of Taguig.
