FOR the fourth straight day, more than 2,000 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were reported by the Department of Health while 91 more lost their battle against the dreaded virus.
In its latest bulletin, the DOH said infections in the country rose to 2,805,294 counting the 2,087 new cases yesterday while the toll climbed to 44,521 for a case fatality rate of 1.59.
The positivity rate in the country stood at 5.2 percent out of the 43,206 tests conducted last November 6.
Active cases dipped slightly to 32,077 from 33,526 last Sunday, with 64.7 percent mild cases, 16 percent moderate cases, 9.5 percent severe cases, 5.8 percent asymptomatic cases, and 4 percent critical cases.
There were 3,510 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 2,728,696. This means that 97.3 percent of COVID patients have recovered.
The PNP death toll on COVID-19 rose to 124 as a 35-year-old policeman from Western Mindanao died from the deadly virus last October 17.
PNP chief Guillermo Eleazar said the death was reported to the PNP only over the weekend.
Based on the policeman’s medical records, he experienced mild symptoms for COVID-19 last October 3 and relied on traditional medication. On October 13, a superior officer asked the cop to seek medical help.
The following day, his family agreed to bring the policeman to the hospital with the help of a close friend. An RT-PCR test showed the cop was positive for COVID-19.
The policeman was declared dead by his attending physician on October 17 due to respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19.
The PNP Health Service reported six PNP personnel have also contracted the deadly disease, bringing the PNP’s total cases to 42,022 with 300 still active cases.
The PNP said 90.76 percent or 203,588 of PNP personnel have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19; 7.89 percent or 17,692 personnel have received the first dose of two-dose vaccines; and 1.35 percent or 3,032 personnel have yet to be inoculated. — With Victor Reyes
