THE Department of Education (DepEd) missed the target numbers in 14 out of 17 performance indicators in 2022, including zero scores in the acquisition of math and science equipment and technical/vocational tools for distribution.

According to the disclosure of accomplishments in the Major Final Output (MFO) for last year, the DepEd exceeded the target in only three areas: number of policies formulated, reviewed, and issued with 54 achieved against the target of 52 for 104 percent; number of education researches completed with 2,143 against the target of 610 for 351 percent; and number of teachers and non-teaching staff trained at 129 percent (420,706 against 325,390 target).

There were high marks in the delivery of joint delivery of vouchers to grantees under the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education (GASTPE) at 99 percent and the creation of teaching items at 95 percent.

The figures were disclosed in the Operational Highlights portion of the audit report released last August 24.

However, on the procurement of textbooks and instruction materials for printing and delivery, the agency reported 1.87 million against a target of 3.695 million or a mere 22 percent.

On the purchase of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment, only 16,416 were met against the target of 73,791, also for 22 percent.

Out of 15,365 teaching items vacant, only 11,023 were filled up for a 72 percent performance.

Meanwhile, against a targeted construction of 16,557 new classrooms under the Basic Education Facilities Funds (BEFF), the DepEd could only manage 12,281 or a shortage of 4,276 for a 74 percent performance.

Still under the BEFF, only 707 Tech-Voc Laboratories were constructed against the year’s target of 864 for an 82 percent performance.

The Commission on Audit said all the figures were taken from the DepEd’s 2022 Physical Accomplishment Report as of December 31, 2022.
