SUPREME Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen yesterday said the court en banc has decided to move to a later date the conduct of this year’s Bar examination due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the country.

Leonen, who chairs the 2020 Bar Exams committee, said the “next Bar examinations will definitely not be held at a date earlier than February 2021.”

The Bar exams are usually held in November.

Last April, Leonen announced the postponement of this year’s Bar exams to give the SC ample time to make the necessary adjustments and safety measures in light of the deadly pandemic. Back then, Leonen said the SC will announce the new date in June when “the current adjustments to the present pandemic becomes clearer.”

Another change in the 2020 Bar examinations being considered then was that it shall be held in Manila and Cebu.

In 2014, the Cebu City Council passed a resolution asking the SC to hold the Bar exams not only in Manila but also in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The move gained the support then of Senate President Franklin Drilon, who said that decentralizing the holding of the exams would cut the cost for examinees coming from the Visayas and Mindanao since they need not go to Manila.

Drilon said then that while the Rules of Court mandated the conduct of the Bar exams in Manila, the SC could rectify it. Up to now, however, the exams are still held annually in Manila.
