TWO strong earthquakes rocked Surigao del Sur yesterday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (, Phivolcs).
The first, a magnitude 5.3 quake, occurred at 8:10 a.m. Its epicenter was some 83 km southeast of Cagwait town. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 9 km.
The shaking was felt at Intensity V in Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur and Intensity IV in Bislig City, also in Surigao del Sur, Phivolcs said.
The second, a magnitude 5.4 quake, occurred at 8:23 a.m. in the same area. Phivolcs said the quake was an aftershock of the first one.
The second quake’s epicenter was some 82 km southeast of Cagwait. It had a depth of 15 km, Phivolcs said.
The shaking was also felt at Intensity V in Hinatuan town and Intensity IV in Bislig City.
Phivolcs said it was not expecting damage from the two quakes and the aftershocks that were recorded as of yesterday morning. — Victor Reyes
