TWO New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed in a series of encounters with government troops in Negros Occidental last Tuesday, the military reported yesterday.

The firefight broke out at around 9:08 a.m. in Sitio Cupad, Barangay Macagahay in Moises Padilla town involving troops from the 62nd Infantry Battalion and 13 rebels.

The rebels were from the NPA’s Komiteng Rehiyon Negros, Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor, according to AFP Visayas Command (Viscom) spokesman Lt. Col. Israel Galorio.

Galorio said the rebels retreated after a 20-minute firefight.

Two succeeding firefights occurred between the pursuing troops and the fleeing rebels in the same barangay, one at 9:42 a.m. and the other at 10:20 a.m., said Galorio.

“The series of encounters resulted in the death of two NPA terrorists,” said Galorio.

Troops also seized an M16 rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun, a handgun, assorted ammunition, and personal belongings left behind by the rebels.
