GOVERNMENT troops killed two New People’s Army rebels and apprehended two others, one of them injured, after a firefight in Bacuag, Surigao del Norte on Monday afternoon.
Troops from the Army’s 30th Infantry Battalion were sent to Sitio Pan-ukan, Barangay Camboayon in Bacuag town after residents reported the presence of rebels conducting extortion and harassment activities.
At around 3 p.m., the troops clashed with about 10 rebels from the Sandatahang Yunit Pangpropaganda, Guerilla Front 16 of the NPA’s North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee.
The rebels, who are said to be under Alberto Castañeda, alias JD, withdrew after a 25-minute firefight.
Troops recovered at the scene the remains of two unidentified rebels and apprehended two others, including one who was wounded and brought to a military hospital in Cagayan de Oro City for treatment. The other one is under police custody.
Also recovered at the scene were an M14 rifle, a Carbine, two shotguns, an improvised explosive device with blasting cap, a hand grenade, and four backpacks with medicines and personal belongings.
