THE PNP is ready for the two-day transport strike set to be staged by transport groups Manibela and Piston starting today.
In a radio interview, PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said security measures are in place to ensure that peace and order would prevail during the protest action.
Manibela and Piston are holding a transport strike to protest the government’s public transportation modernization program.
Last month, 22 senators signed a resolution calling for the suspension of the program. President Marcos Jr., however. rejected the call of the lawmakers.
“Whenever activities like these happen, we are always ready and our policemen are on standby,” said Fajardo, without saying how many policemen are due to be deployed.
Fajardo said PNP vehicles will also be deployed to provide free rides to commuters who may be affected.
“If we find stranded commuters, the order of the Chief PNP (Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil) is to provide them free rides, and extend help (to those affected),” said Fajardo.
She said the PNP respects the decision of the transport groups to hold a protest.
Fajardo said the police force is hoping the transport groups would also respect the decision of their fellow drivers and jeepney operators who will not join the protest.
“We respect their right to hold protest actions or rally but we hope that they will also respect the rights of other drivers and operators who won’t be joining the transport strike,” said Fajardo.
