PNP chief Oscar Albayalde yesterday conferred the PNP Heroism Medals to two members of the Western Visayas Police Regional Office who helped save passengers of one of three bancas that capsized at the Iloilo-Guimaras Strait last month.

Given the medals were Chief Master Sgt. Jonathan Magan of the San Lorenzo Municipal Police Station in Guimaras province and Staff Sgt. Rodito Erpelua, assigned with the regional headquarters support unit of the regional police office.

Albayalde said the awards were given “in recognition of their heroic acts and conspicuous courage above and beyond the call of duty for saving lives of fellow passengers on board M/B Chichi during a sea mishap when the vessel capsized in the Iloilo-Guimaras strait on August 3, 2019 at about 12:15 p.m.”

Strong winds and currents caused the three motor bancas to sink, leaving 31 passengers dead.
