ONE hundred ninety-six more deaths due to the new coronavirus disease were reported by the Department of Health yesterday along with 8,127 new infections that raised the number of infections in the country to 1,627,816.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH said one laboratory was not operational while three others failed to submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS) last August 3.

The toll from the deadly virus climbed to 28,427 for a case fatality rate of 1.75.
Active cases jumped to 66,895 from 63,171 last Wednesday, with 94.6 percent mild cases, 1.9 percent severe cases, 1.3 percent moderate cases, 1.1 percent critical cases, and 1 percent asymptomatic cases.

The DOH also reported 4,343 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 1,532,494. This means that 94.1 percent of COVID patients recovered.

The government limits the conduct of COVID-19 tests on “risk-based” cases or those that only need the tests, like in areas with high cases of infection due to the limited supply, National task Force against COVID-19 testing czar Vince Dizon said.

Dizon said the country continues to conduct 50,000 to 56,000 tests a day even as the government kept repeating that the detection strategy of the government should be intensified along with the prevention, isolation and treatment schemes in light of the spread of the Delta variant. — With Jocelyn Montemayor
