137 more die; toll climbs to 22,788

DEATHS from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) showed no signs of slowing down as 137 more patients lost their battle against the deadly virus while 7,302 new cases raised the number of infections in the country to 1,315, 639, according to the Department of Health.

In its latest bulletin yesterday, the DOH said that along with the 145 deaths reported last Saturday, the death toll rose to 22,788, just 12 short of the 23K mark.

The DOH said 65 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.

Active cases stood at 59,865, with 95.7 of them either asymptomatic or mild cases.

Last Saturday, the DOH reported 8, 207 new cases.

Only one laboratory was not able to submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System, the DOH said.

“Based on the data in the past 14 days, the one non-reporting laboratory contributes, on average 0.17 percent of samples tested and 0.18 of positive individuals,” the DOH said.

The agency also said that 15 duplicates were removed from the total case count, with nine of them recoveries and one death.

The number of survivors climbed to 1,232, 986 after 7, 701 new recoveries were reported.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it received a lone report confirming one new COVID case and one new fatality in the Middle East.

This brought to 20,093 the number of overseas Filipinos who have contracted the deadly virus while the death toll climbed to 1,199.

The Middle East remained as the region with the most number of overseas Filipinos who were infected with the virus as well as those who died from it with 11,360 and 794, respectively.

This was followed by Asia and the Pacific with 4,219 cases, Europe with 3,530 and 984 in the Americas.

Though it has the lowest number of cases, the Americas registered the second highest death toll among Filipinos with 242, followed by Europe with130 and 33 in the Asia Pacific region.

As of June 12, the DFA said 12,077 overseas Filipinos have recovered from the virus.
