PNP chief Guillermo Eleazar said the officer, assigned in Zamboanga City, tested positive for the virus last May 1 and was brought to a hospital.
Seven days later, the officer was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and intubated after he experienced difficulty in breathing. At around 5:22 a.m. last Sunday, the official succumbed to the virus.
The PNP Health service reported 116 new COVID cases in the police force, bringing to 23,983 the total number of personnel infected, with 22,067 having recovered and 1,850 still cases.
“It’s saddenning that there is infection in our ranks every day, that’s why I continue my reminder to our policemen to be doubly careful,” said Eleazar. — With Victor Reyes
