10.5M voters deactivated, deleted from voters list

ALMOST 10.5 million registered voters were either deactivated or deleted from the voters list to be used in the May 9 polls, according to data from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The poll body said 7,236,952 voters were deactivated and 3,246,262 names were deleted from the list of voters.

Among the deactivated voters are the 7,229,493 who failed to vote in the last two national elections; 3,993 having been excluded by courts; and 2,718 having been declared as insane or incompetent by the authority.

Also deactivated are the 536 who were sentenced to over 1 year imprisonment, 134 who failed to validate, 52 who lost their Filipino citizenship, and 26 who were sentenced for committing crimes against national security.

On the other hand, deleted voters include the 1,490,678 who transferred to another city/municipality; 892,627 double registrants; and 755,769 who died.

Also deleted are the records of 64,320 double entries, and 42,868 who applied as overseas voters.

There are a total of 6,950,449 newly registered voters for the May 9 polls.

In addition, there were 1,520,500 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) voters, who have or will turn 18 years old by Election Day and have been included automatically in the voters list.

In all, there are now 65,831,792 registered voters for the May 9 elections.

In a related development, the Comelec – Committee on Local Absentee Voting (CLAV) reported that they have already approved 84,221 applications, but have denied 9,346 applications for LAV.

In all, there were 93,819 applicants for LAV, which will run from April 27 to 29, 2022.

Majority of the applicants are members of the Philippine National Police at 48,698; followed by the Philippine Army at 32,786; 4,261 applicants from the Philippine Air Force; and 3,075 from the Department of Education.

The LAV was also availed by 953 members of the media.
