THE death toll from rain-induced landslides and flooding in the Davao region has increased to 16, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said yesterday.

The Camp Aguinaldo-based NDRRMC, which reported 15 fatalities as of Sunday, yesterday said 12 died in Monkayo town in Davao de Oro, clarifying figures it released on Sunday that 13 people died in the town.

Two died in Davao City and one in Mati City in Davao Oriental, also due to landslides.

The 16th fatality, the NDRRMC said, died of drowning in Don Marcelino town in Davao Occidental.

The NDRRMC said 10 of the 16 deaths have been already validated while the five others are still undergoing validation process.

In a situation report, the NDRRMC said the number of residents affected by the shear line that caused rains in the Davao and Caraga regions is now at 152,642 families or 670,807 individuals.

Of the number, 25,472 (92,830 individuals) have been displaced although the number was down yesterday to 8,590 families (32,116 individuals).

The initial cost of damage to agriculture in Caraga alone was pegged at P14.04 million while the cost of damage to infrastructure in Davao region was at P26.8 million.

During a public briefing, NDRRMC spokesman Edgar Posadas said damage assessment were continuing as of yesterday.

Posadas said 11 local government units have declared states of calamity — seven in the Davao region and four in Caraga.

He said local government units are able to attend the needs of those affected.

“If there will be shortage, we have readily available resources from the national (government). We just would like to assure everyone that the government is here to help, if needed,” said Posadas.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development said some P48.3 million worth of cash, food and relief aid has been provided to the affected communities in Northern Mindanao, Davao and Caraga regions.

It said 153,142 families (617,546 persons) from 388 barangays in Regions X (Northern Mindanao), XI (Davao), XIII (Caraga) have been affected. Of the total, 3,765 families (13,944 persons) are staying in 50 evacuation centers and 4,825 families (18,172 persons) are staying with relatives or friends.

The DSWD said it still has P4.128 billion worth of funds (P1.54 billion) and stockpiles of food and non-food-relief items (P2.585 billion) on standby and ready to be tapped when needed. — With Jocelyn Montemayor
