A BYSTANDER was injured after an improvised bomb exploded at a gasoline station in Lamitan City in Basilan on Tuesday night, police said.

Investigators are looking into the possible involvement of the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf in the attack which occurred at 6:55 p.m. at the Bonjing gasoline station on P. Cuevas Street, Barangay Matibay.

The attack came hours after authorities declared the city as Abu Sayyaf-free.

Police named the injured bystander as Alwadun Asnain, 20, a resident of Barangay Matibay. He was brought to the Lamitan District Hospital.

The bomb was placed in front of a fuel dispenser of the gasoline station, police said.

Authorities recovered from the crime scene a blasting cap and a cellphone battery.

Police said the owner of the gasoline station, Noel Mateo, reported he received an extortion letter last April, threatening to blow up the gas station if he refuses to pay.

It said it is coordinating with intelligence units to determine if the Abu Sayyaf is connected to the attack.

Earlier on Tuesday, local government and military officials declared the city as ASG-free.

“The declaration of Lamitan City as ASG-free is a testament to our united efforts,” said 101st Brigade commander Brig. Gen. Alvin Luzon.

“We have faced numerous challenges, but our collective resolve has brought us to this day. We are committed to continuing our mission to ensure peace and security in this city,” added Luzon.
