THE Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) yesterday said around 1,500 Filipinos are expected to attend the activities of the World Youth Day (WYD) 2023 to be held in Lisbon, Portugal from August 1 to 6.
CBCP – Episcopal Commission on Youth (ECY) Executive Secretary Fr. Jade Licuanan said “reliable data” from the local organizing committee in Portugal placed the Filipino youth attendees between 1,500 and 2,000.
Of the total, Licuanan said around 270 are part of the CBCP-ECY delegation.
“A bulk of the Philippine delegation will be coming from different dioceses, religious congregations, and lay church organizations,” Licuanan was quoted in a report by CBCP News.
According to CBCP News, the WYD participants are already in Portugal for the “Days in the Dioceses,” which is a preparatory event for the pilgrims and the host communities.
“Throughout these days, from July 26 to 31, the pilgrims will become acquainted with the host region, as well as the local Church,” Licuanan said.
The World Youth Day is an event of the Catholic Church that takes place every three years in different host countries.
The event offers a deeper encounter with Jesus Christ through liturgical celebrations, networking, faith sharing, catechetical sessions, and prayer with the Pope.
