NORTHPORT forward John Amores’ second lease on life on the hardcourt appears to be short-lived.
The temperamental cager, together with his brother, surrendered to police in Lumban, Laguna early yesterday after his involvement in a shooting incident in Barangay Maytalang Uno last Wednesday night.
Amores is facing an attempted murder complaint.
Batang Pier coach Bonnie Tan and team management could not be reached for comment yesterday.
PBA chief Willie Marcial said while the case is under probe, the pro league cannot comment on the matter but admitted it’s a sad phase they have to go through.
“This is a matter that is subject of investigation by the police, and we cannot comment on it,” Marcial said. “But we are saddened by such an unfortunate incident.”
Based on initial reports from the Lumban Municipal police station, Amores allegedly chased and shot the victim, identified as Lee Calcada, at around 6:10 p.m. last Wednesday after they got into an altercation in a basketball game.
The game reportedly had a P4,000 bet.
A CCTV footage of the incident that went viral showed Amores getting off a motorcycle driven by his younger brother with a gun and firing shots at the victim who, fortunately, was not hurt.
The same report said Amores and Calcada were playing in a hoops duel at Barangay Salac when they got into a heated altercation.
The former Jose Rizal University player challenged Calcada to a fight.
Calcada reportedly followed Amores at Barangay Maytalang Uno where he was shot by Amores using a still unidentified type of firearm.
This was not Amores’ first big involvement in an altercation that has gone viral.
Nearly two years ago, he attacked several College of St. Benilde players in the 98th NCAA basketball tournament.
He was given a second chance after NorthPort tabbed him in the fifth round (51st overall) in last year’s PBA Draft and was signed to a one-year pact. Amores has averaged 5.1 points in the ongoing Governors’ Cup.
Amores was meted an indefinite suspension by the NCAA two seasons ago for his stunning behavior in the ugly fracas that saw him charging the Blazers’ bench and throwing punches at everyone that crossed his paths.
Everybody is waiting to see what will happen next. One thing is sure: his pro cage career is doomed.
