“Maple Leaf Dreams” is a film that provides a realistic portrayal of the struggles faced by Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Canada.
Co-written with Hannah Cruz by director Benedict Mique, the movie follows Molly (Kira Balinger) and Macky (LA Santos), a young couple who move to Toronto in search of better opportunities. The film depicts the challenges M and M encounter, including financial difficulties, cultural adjustments, and the emotional toll of living far from family. They grapple with these while navigating the own difficulties of their young love.
The narrative focuses on the sacrifices many OFWs make to pursue a better future, highlighting the complexities of life abroad. The film emphasizes how Molly and Macky must rely on each other for support, while also finding solidarity within the Filipino community in Canada. Themes of resilience, hardship, and the realities of working in a foreign land are central to the storyline.
“Maple Leaf” also allows real OFWs in Canada the chance to express their real experience:
“You will take your whole life with you in 46 kilos,” said one of the OFWs.
“We are the best and the most hardworking people,” said another with pride.
“Pantay pantay tayo lahat dito,” was the realization of an OFW single mom.
Kira Balinger and LA Santos give sincere performances. They really look like a young couple – awkward and unsure sometimes, effectively conveying the emotional toll of their characters’ experiences, while seasoned actors like Joey Marquez, Snooky Serna, and Ricky Davao provide additional depth to the supporting cast.
The film is shot largely in Canada has scenes set in well-known landmarks such as Niagara Falls and the CN Tower. It will also be shown in several Canadian cities, including Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver, marking a notable achievement for an independently produced Filipino film.
