A 65-year-old employee of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority-Parkway Clearing Group was killed when he was hit by a sports utility vehicle at the EDSA P. Tuazon Tunnel in Quezon City early morning last Saturday.
The victim was with another MMDA employee on the northbound side of the tunnel manning traffic flow in the area when he was hit.
Traffic cones were placed on the road to cordon off one lane, while three warning devices were also placed in the area to warn motorists of the presence of the MMDA personnel.
MMDA Special Operations Group Head Gabriel Go said CCTV footage showed that an SUV entered the cordoned-off lane and hit the victim.
Instead of stopping, the SUV sped up and tried to flee but was stopped near the Cubao exit by responding agency enforcers.
“Normally, when something hits the car or something head-on, we will stop. But in this case, the driver just sped up until such time that he was stopped and nabbed,” said Go.
The unnamed victim was brought to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The driver, also unidentified, was taken into custody by the Quezon City police and will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
Go said the driver and the family of the victim reached an amicable settlement yesterday.
As part of the settlement, the driver will take care of the cost of the wake and burial and will also provide financial assistance to the victim’s family.
