PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. yesterday vowed to continue strengthening the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-related courses and subjects in the country as he touted the recent victory of several Filipino students in different Science and Mathematics Olympiads abroad.
“Proud of our Filipino innovators at the forefront of STEM. With Filipino innovation driving our vision, we’re making science and technology the heart of progress in Bagong Pilipinas. We are shaping a future where Filipino ingenuity leads on the global stage,” the President said in the 264th episode of BBM Vlog that was released late yesterday.
He said that under his goal of establishing a “Bagong Pilipinas,” the foundations of Science and Technology should continue to be strengthened while innovations continue to be sustained because this knowledge is the main weapon towards becoming a prosperous and modern Philippines.
Marcos said last August, a Filipino student from the Philippine Science High School won the Philippines’ first gold in the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad which was held in Brazil while Filipino students also won two golds and one silver at the International Nuclear Science Olympiad held at the New Clark City in Pampanga last month.
He said a Filipino student also won a bronze medal in the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad in Riyadh while the country won gold, silver and bronze at the ASEAN+3 Junior Science Odyssey in Cambodia, and two golds at the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge.
The President said these are important achievements as the STEM subjects serve as the basis for new technologies and innovations in the world.
“The involvement of new technology in our lives continues to increase and we need to be well versed in the use of these technologies, we must understand Scientific studies and Mathematics to be able to join the world economy,” he said.
Last August, the President vowed that his administration would be a “supportive government” that would ensure the development of the technology and innovation industries which in turn could help improve the productivity and the quality of life of Filipinos.
