The University of the Philippines (UP) and De La Salle University signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen academic cooperation particularly in the areas of social entrepreneurship and service learning.

The two universities will collaborate in the areas of research, academic programs, and social engagement.

“This notable partnership, a conscious effort to promote a culture of sustainability in the country, will have a far-reaching impact not only on our respective institutions, but on the broader academic and national communities we serve,” said UP President Angelo A. Jimenez.

Both universities will develop activities of mutual interest in service-learning and social entrepreneurship, specifically on initiatives and/or innovations; implementation of agreed collaborative efforts; collaborative research projects; resource mobilization; exchange of academic information and materials; and other forms of academic cooperation.

According to UP Vice President for Academic Affairs Leo D.P. Cubillan, the development and implementation of each activity or project shall be separately negotiated and agreed upon between the faculties, schools or institutes which shall carry out specific projects.

“A separate memorandum of agreement for each project shall be prepared and signed by both universities,” he explained.

Social entrepreneurship is the innovative approach to impact on the lives and wellbeing of communities by targeting the triple bottom line of sustainability: economic, social and environmental development. While traditional business enterprises have profit at the center, the heart of social enterprises are their social and ecological mission to ensure holistic and sustainable development.

Social enterprise ventures are mission-driven innovative solutions with the primary aim of creating positive social impacts while also maintaining environmental integrity and ensuring financial sustainability.

Service learning is an approach that combines academic learning with meaningful community service. Students apply what they learn from class to address real-world issues.

“Service learning offers an opportunity for our students to see the social relevance of their disciplines, actively engage with their communities, enhance their interpersonal skills, and provide space for personal growth. It is a pedagogy that connects theory with practice,” noted Cubillan.
