‘Rubio and Friends’

Throughout his career as an artist for three decades, one thing Dominic Rubio has learned to cherish most are the artists he has met in his journey. These are people he has learned to hold dear, cherish and respect. As he celebrated his 51st birthday last December, many of his friends joined him in an exhibit dedicated to friendship — something that excited him to no end.

These are friends from different times or parts of his life. Some like Bayani Ray Acala and Jerry Morada are friends from his hometown days in Paete, Laguna. Edwin Tres Reyes and Aljo Pingol, he met during his studies at the University of Santo Tomas; Carlo Magno, Richard Arimado, Karina Baluyut, Aileen Lanuza and Vincent de Pio were colleagues at the Guevarra Group of Artists; while Faico and Ram Mallari he met when he became actively involved in sculpting. Now during his latest years as a senior artist at Galerie Joaquin, he met many more friends including Mario de Rivera and Edwin Wilwayco.

Artist friendships are often synonymous with collaboration and creation. The exhibit also features a view of how friendship and relationships between artists can develop as a conversation through art and how it becomes a fundamental part of each artist’s practice.
