GMA reporter and news anchor Nelson Canlas is set to release his first-ever children’s book, “Si Migoy, Ang Batang Tausug,” on January 31 at the City of Firsts Araneta City. This simple, yet groundbreaking literary work celebrates Mindanaoan heritage, with a particular focus on Tausug culture and cuisine, making it the first of its kind.

The book, written in three languages—Tagalog, English, and Tausug—is a pioneering effort to promote inclusivity and cultural understanding among readers of all cultures, nationalities, and ages. With its rich storytelling and vibrant illustrations, “Si Migoy, Ang Batang Tausug” introduces young readers to the distinct flavors and traditions of the Tausug people.

Chef Miguel Cabal Moreno, co-founder and chef of Palm Grill, and the inspiration behind Migoy, Ang Batang Tausug, and an advocate of Mindanaoan Cuisine

The book, especially its child protagonist, Migoy, was inspired by the image, personality, and childhood stories of Chef Miggy Cabel Moreno, co-founder and chef of Palm Grill and an advocate for Mindanaoan cuisine. The story captures and illustrates the nuances, warmth, and lively spirit of a young Migoy, creating a relatable and endearing character for children.

Co-written by Chef Miggy’s sister Dr. Ma. Isabel Cabel Moreno-Go, a passionate advocate of Tausug culture and co-founder of Zamboanga’s Hermosa Book Club, the book brings authenticity and depth to its storytelling. Isabel’s commitment to preserving and promoting the richness of Mindanaoan heritage shines through on every page.

The book’s colorful illustrations came from award-winning illustrator Danielle Florendo, while the book’s content was expertly edited by Odette de Guzman (Filipino) and Kath C. Eustaquio-Derla (English). The Tausug translations were meticulously written by Chef Miggy’s mom Melissa Cabel and Marivic Tan Angga Abubakar.

Published by PaperKat Books, “Si Migoy, Ang Batang Tausug” is a product of collaboration and dedication to storytelling excellence from professionals coming from all parts of the Philippines. Even before its release, the book has already garnered international attention, reflecting its potential to bring Mindanaoan culture and stories to a global audience.

In a heartfelt statement, Canlas shared that the book is “a labor of love, born out of my years of searching for a deeper purpose and a way to give back, inspired by the values that GMA has instilled in me throughout my career.”
