‘Inday’

Galerie Francesca relaunches Inday Cadapan as INDAY, a woman of self-expression and socio-political aspirations. Elsie “Inday” Reyes-Cadapan (b. September 12, 1939) was always at the forefront of dealing with the marginalization of women in Philippine society, implicated within frameworks of feudalism and toxic masculinity expressed as regionalism, migrant labor, authoritarianism, and even environmental issues. As a social realist ahead of her time, she was an honest artist who had a strong conviction by just sharing her mind openly and freely through her art.

Inday’s art is characterized by a sense of absurdity and whimsies that one does not normally expect. Her art is a documentation of her insights, experiences and even her visions. She painted forms and figures and felt it. This allows her to quell the artistic conflicts raging in her. Sleepless nights, discomforts and anxieties turned into vibrant colors that reflected a life filled with excitements even in the midst of her illness.

Her work is a form of self-expression. It started with her socio-political aspirations and how she wanted to voice out her opinion against the unfair labor practices, the poverty and how unjust the world has been. Since she was not able to write her thoughts out effectively, she needed a medium in which she could express her own commentaries and help the people, the viewers, to see how they could make the community better and more understanding to the needs of its people. She wanted to show the beauty of what she saw as an ugly world.

“INDAY”, Inday Cadapan’s solo exhibition is presented by Galerie Francesca, Galerie Francesca at MoCAF: Modern and Contemporary Art Festival, Fairmont Hotel, Makati City.
