Artists create out of a desire to produce art but it is a welcome surprise to find individuals who express appreciation for their works, going so far as to collect pieces.
For Anna Vergel RS, a meeting with one of the country’s top businessmen became more than just a courtesy call, but a moment where inspiration hit.
Vergel recently met with SM Prime Holdings Executive Committee Chairman Hans T. Sy and during their exchange the tycoon toured her around his personal collection or art pieces.
“I was stunned. There were museum-grade artworks, rare memorabilia, and the environment was so thoughtfully curated. Then I realized—many of my own paintings were right there on the walls fronting the HQ Chapel,” Vergel RS shared.
Unbeknownst to her, St has also collected Vergel’s works throughout the years, framing the alongside pieces from celebrated local and international artists.
“That visit inspired me on so many levels. It reminded me of the importance of creating work that moves people, that lives outside the gallery. If someone like Mr. Hans Sy can take the time to appreciate, give importance and nurture local artists, then I owe it to myself to keep growing and sharing my work,” she shared.
The tour continued with a look into Sy’s personal collection, which included works by some of his favorite artists and an artwork by his niece, prominently displayed in his main office. The meeting ended with Sy handing Vergel a collector’s book on the private collection of modernist master Juvenal Sansó, further deepening their artistic exchange.
The experience gave her renewed clarity—to pursue new works with intention and fully commit to her upcoming exhibit next year. It was a quiet yet powerful moment that affirmed a truth every artist long to encounter: that the most meaningful turning points don’t always arrive with spectacle, but with sincerity and quiet acknowledgment.
