Michael Pastorizo’s composition serves as a passionate gesture for extrinsic elements bound by time — blooming and dawning though temporary, yet never failing to embody notions of an undying soul. His persistence in mastering this craft results in a distinct style of florid, vibrant and spirited body of work.
Pastorizo’s oeuvre is uniquely characterized by the concept of efflorescence. The works for “Floraison” uses a metaphor of nature’s blossoming: calm and delicate, yet enchanting in a sense where they exude mesmerizing imagery. The artist has always been inclined and fascinated by the unprecedented beauty of flowers; the therapeutic process of their blooming is conceptually manifested in the artist’s use of color, texture and form, resulting in a visual burst of flourishing energy.
The enchanting abstractions in the exhibit also intend to capture a definite moment in time.
In particular, the artist has predominantly used hues of blue, violet, ruby, and yellow — colors apparent during the time of dawn, the start of a new day. In view of this, Pastorizo is determined to immortalize these beautiful yet ephemeral moments of time and nature, driven to illustrate a spiritual connection to its viewers. He hopes to memorialize the boundless allure of nature’s gifts and celebrate the grace of waking life.
Pastorizo took up Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) in college. His career later on, however, took on a rather different path, fated or not. In 2000, he started to work for an artist as a canvas maker. He later on worked for different artists over the next 15 years. Through his stint with artists over the years, he learned several art techniques and styles. He learned how to use oil and acrylic for paintings, silkscreen printing, making sculptures, molding and casting, among others. He then started to work on abstract paintings and later on honed his unique techniques.
The artist’s recognizable composition, excluding all extraneous details of the external world, focuses on a moment of elegance, harmony and dignity. The paintings are a still moment when the dimension of the outside world falls away. They illustrate Pastorizo’s desire and hope for the possibility of that kind of order in the world, especially during this current grim phase in society.
“Floraison” by Michael Pastorizo was on view from September 17 – 26, at Galerie Joaquin Podium, located at Level 3, The Podium, ADB Avenue, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City.
