Many people juggle multiple roles daily. Whether it is a mom trying to raise her kids while building a career, or a father providing for his family while taking care of his parents, many Filipinos focus so much on others that they forget the most important person in their lives — themselves.
Insurance company AXA Philippines wanted to highlight the importance of having some time for oneself and during a two-day retreat at Anya Resort in Tagaytay, participants were taught ways to pamper themselves in the comfort of their own homes.
Flow Retreats founders Noelle Hilaro and Denise Gonzales-Bernardo kicked things off with a short session of freehand mandala drawing. A mandala is a geometric configuration of symbols used in various spiritual traditions and is usually employed for focusing attention.
Guests were invited to draw their mandalas freely, using different pens, pencils and markers for a truly unique piece.
This was followed by an aromatic oil blending session. Participants were given the chance to mix lavender and chamomile essential oils into a base of fractionated coconut oil to create a relaxing massage oil. The oil was then used as Noelle and Denise showed several self-massage techniques that can be used by everyone as a way to destress and relax after a long day.
Yoga has long been considered a great way to center oneself. On the second day of the retreat, guests were invited to a morning yoga session in the garden of the resort. Going through the different poses as the day started to get warm, thanks to the rising sun, was an invigorating experience. Sore and tense muscles were stretched while more neutral poses allowed everyone to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.
Before returning to Manila, Noelle and Denise also shared some tips that people can use at home to better balance their days. They noted that sleep is one of the most important aspects of daily life and having the right amount of restful sleep can help start the day at their best.
It is also a good idea to start the day knowing what needs to be accomplished. Having a direction for the day will make it less stressful and more productive. This also means setting specific times for daily activities, allowing better focus and fewer distractions.
Setting designated areas for professional and leisure activities will also help in this endeavor.
However, all work and no play is not the way to go. It is recommended to take breaks whenever there is a need to. This allows a person to relax and shift focus, minimizing burnout from more mentally or physically strenuous tasks.
Finding that balanced lifestyle can take some time as each person is different, but the benefits it gives far outweighs the effort needed. With a balanced lifestyle, people can live happier and more fulfilling lives, both for themselves and their loved ones.
