DE LA SALLE Philippines (DLSP) has launched its new “Isang Libo, Kada Uno” campaign which aims to feed about 1,000 quarantine-affected homeless families residing in Manila North Cemetery every week.
Homeless people are among the most vulnerable groups especially at this time, noted Brother Armin Luistro, Lasallian East Asia District brother visitor. They will not be qualified for the social amelioration program and the cash assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development since these families do not have registered home addresses.
A donation of P1,000 can go as far as feeding a family of five for a week.
Upon announcement of the campaign, the “Kada-Uno” challenge was able to garner over P500,000 on its first day alone.
This effort is the newest addition to the organization’s growing list of initiatives amid the country’s battle against the global pandemic.
Since the beginning of the quarantine period, the DLSP has opened the De La Salle University (DLSU), De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) and De La Salle Green Hills campuses to partner with three hospitals — the Ospital ng Maynila, Philippine General Hospital and The Medical City.
DLS-CSB’s Sandejas Gym and DLSU’s Enrique M. Razon Sports Center have also served as temporary shelters for the homeless people which follow safety and hygiene protocols by the Department of Health — from social distancing and regular body temperature checking to the usage of decontamination mist tents, hand sanitizers and hospital-grade disinfectants.
