Early detection saves live

ARE you feeling anxious or experiencing unexplained heart palpitations? Do sudden irregular heartbeats or flip-flopping sensations worry you?

Palpitations can be triggered by stress, exercise, medications, or, rarely, a medical condition. While often harmless, persistent nervousness, shortness of breath, and rapid heartbeats warrant a visit to a doctor or cardiologist.

It might be atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common yet perilous irregular heart rhythm.

AFib increases your risk of heart failure and stroke. Don’t overlook it – get a pulse check and share this crucial advice. Heart experts at the Philippine Heart Rhythm Society’s “Atrial Fibrillation Public Awareness” event on September 16 emphasized early intervention during Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month.

AFib doesn’t discriminate by age; it affects young adults too, presenting as palpitations, shortness of breath, nausea, fatigue, or irregular pulses during checkups. Screening is vital, especially for those 75 and older or individuals with heart conditions/risk factors. Treatment options, including catheter ablation, can enhance your quality of life.

Research reveals a growing prevalence of AFib in Asia.

While the Philippines has proficient arrhythmia specialists, improving accessibility is imperative. A multifaceted approach involves medication, procedures, and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Steer clear of AFib triggers, such as drugs, smoking, excessive alcohol/caffeine, stress, mineral deficiencies, and poor oral health. Stay vigilant for your heart’s sake, experts advise.

Dr. Luigi Pierre Segundo, a cardiology specialist, recommended a simple self-assessment: checking your pulse. “Place your index and middle fingers gently on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of your thumb. You’ll feel the blood pulsing beneath your fingers. Then, with a watch or clock featuring a second hand, either count the beats for a full minute or tally them for 15 seconds and multiply by four.”

Segundo noted that a typical heart rate ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute. “If your rate exceeds this range, it’s a signal to seek medical consultation. Early intervention can help prevent the need for catheter ablation due to abnormal heart rhythms.”

Regarding smart wearables like smartwatches, they can calculate your heart rate and identify irregular heartbeats, even capturing an ECG. Segundo clarified that they don’t endorse specific brands, and there are no strict guidelines mandating the purchase of such gadgets for pulse monitoring. “However, if it fits your budget, why not explore this technology?”
