TikTok, a popular video-sharing social networking app, is used to create short music, lip-sync, dance, comedy and talent videos, has become an instant breeding ground for viral challenges which likewise paved the way for a new breed of social media influencers.
For 22-year-old Andrea Nicole So, with TikTok handle @andweaso, the app was more than just a stage for trends. She used this as a venue to utilize creativity to speak on women empowerment.
A Consular and Diplomatic Affairs alumna from the School of Diplomacy and Governance of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Andrea brought to the site her open-mindedness, appreciation of diversity and her evident confidence in public speaking — which, according to her, are vital characteristics in being a content creator.
“I’ve always had quite the imagination and enjoyed writing stories so being able to use this platform to express my creativity and share my thoughts with my audience is something I’m thankful for,” she beamed.
The self-confessed feminist ensures that her narratives all introduce strong independent women leads that break free from the stereotypical roles portrayed by the media. Her plots included a queen overthrown by her brothers who believe that women should not be allowed to rule the kingdom. Another was about a daughter who was hailed as the new CEO of her father’s company despite the lack of support from the board, among many others.
She has likewise featured female characters who depicted powerful roles such as agents, fighters and drummers, the latter being her centerpiece with over 280,000 likes.
Currently, the young artist has already published over 250 videos and has gained a massive audience of approximately 216,000 followers and 6.3 million likes. “I want to encourage my followers to be who they want to be regardless of their gender and treat each other equally,” she added.
