AS Watson, the world’s largest international health and beauty retailer, proudly announces a significant milestone in its partnership with Operation Smile: the sponsorship of 6,500 corrective surgeries for children with cleft conditions. This achievement underscores AS Watson’s unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of children in need.

In 2018, with the aim of bringing smiles and hope to cleft children, AS Watson launched its inaugural global sustainability program, “Give a Smile.” This initiative aligns with AS Watson’s broader mission of brightening the lives of its customers today and tomorrow.

Malina Ngai, chief executive officer of AS Watson  for Asia and Europe, expressed her delight at the impact of the Give a Smile campaign: “Through collaboration with Operation Smile, AS Watson has successfully sponsored 6,500 surgeries, transforming the lives of cleft children and their families. The surgeries have not only enhanced the children’s physical well-being but also their mental well-being. Initially targeting 10,000 smiles by 2030, we now anticipate surpassing this goal by 2026.”

Ngai acknowledged the collective effort behind this achievement, extending heartfelt thanks to AS Watson’s people, customers, and business partners. She emphasizes that the Give a Smile campaign has been a joint endeavor, enabling cleft children to regain the smiles they deserve.

As Watson’s Next Gen Sustainability Committee and Watsons Philippines recently collaborated on a medical mission in the Philippines, from October 17-21. With exclusive sponsorship from AS Watson, 60 patients will undergo life-changing surgeries conducted by Operation Smile’s medical professionals.

Danilo Chiong, managing director of Watsons Philippines, expressed gratitude for the partnership with Operation Smile, aiming to achieve or exceed their goal of 3,300 surgeries in the Philippines by 2030. Beyond the surgeries, Chiong notes the profound impact on beneficiaries’ lives, providing newfound hope for a normal life.

Kathy Magee, co-founder, president, and chief executive officer of Operation Smile, acknowledged the cornerstone role of partnerships in their mission’s success. She expresses profound gratitude for the collaboration with AS Watson, noting its transformative impact on patients and communities, providing access to comprehensive care and surgery for a healthier future.

AS Watson’s commitment to empowering women is exemplified through its support of Operation Smile’s Women in Medicine initiative, providing educational pathways for women in the medical and health sectors. Ngai highlights the importance of engaging young people, as evidenced by the third cohort of the AS Watson Next Gen Sustainability Committee inaugurated in September 2023.

Ngai emphasized that AS Watson is giving young people a voice in driving sustainability initiatives. The committee, comprising 21 Gen Z members across Asia and Europe, will focus on youth empowerment, environmental protection, and diversity, equity, and inclusion during their 18-month mandate.

Watsons Philippines invites customers to join their fund drive to assist children with cleft palate conditions. Donation cans are placed in over 600 Watsons Stores, and online transactions can be made through the Watsons Online Store. Customers can also contribute by donating their Watsons Card and SM Advantage Card points, directly funding essential surgeries. By sharing this initiative, individuals not only help children obtain perfect smiles but also ensure a brighter future ahead.
