Our vision is one of the most important senses responsible for the way we interact with the world. This makes eye issues very impactful for a person’s quality of life. However, vision can deteriorate because of several factors, including age and congenital issues. While eyeglasses can help correct some of these concerns, others opt for surgical procedures.

Fatima University Medical Center Antipolo (FUMC) raises the bar for eye care with the acquisition of the Zeiss Visumax 800 femtosecond laser, allowing it to offer the Zeiss Small incision lenticule extraction (Smile) Pro procedure. Aimed at addressing nearsightedness and astigmatism, the Zeiss Smile pro is a minimally invasive procedure that offers a significantly lower recovery time compared to other operations. It can address myopia of up to 1000D and astigmatism of up to 500D.
The procedure uses a laser to ablate the cornea, creating a corneal tissue called a lenticule that is removed through a small incision at the edge. This forgoes the need to create a corneal flap, allowing for faster recovery and maintaining the biomechanical stability of the cornea. The removal of the lenticule reshapes the cornea, fixing the patient’s eye’s refractive issues.

Thanks to the new machine, the entire procedure can be done in minutes, with the majority of the time taken by the adjustment of the machine based on the specific parameters for the patient’s procedure. The laser ablation process itself is done in about nine seconds per eye, significantly faster than the 30 seconds needed in the original Smile procedure.
“Our integration of Zeiss Smile pro underscores our dedication to pioneering the future of laser vision correction in the Philippines, providing Filipinos with the latest technology available, complemented by our caring and professional medical experts and staff,” said Dr. Vicente Santos, president of Fatima University Medical Center.
“FUMC has a long and successful track record of ach ieving outstanding results for our eye care patients, and this latest advancement further solidifies our commitment to healthcare
