‘A Midnight Interlude’

Marco Coching describes his abstract paintings for “A Midnight Interlude” as the enjoyable product of consciousness and unconsciousness, inspired by the movement of sea and wind at midnight where a chorus of peace is manifested.

The exhibition seeks to explore the idea of nonobjective realism and aims to convey a sense of emotion equal to that caused by encountering representational work. Coching is interested in creating unrecognizable, textural forms that imitate reality to an extent but still remain ambiguous. The artist aims to create a kind of unsettling sublime feeling through the unknown along with sense of comfort through the familiar, introducing a solemn atmosphere that presents an impression and extension of real space that provides the viewer an intimate place for reflection.

The paintings seek to evoke memories of specific places but through an abstract lens, revealing the instinct one has to associate color, shape, and form to tangible places. They are meant to inspire these memories alongside exploring how panoramas change seasonally through areas of soft textures and smooth painted forms.Marco Cochinguses painting as a way of reconstructing his thoughts, creating intuitive abstract works based on a sense of a place and a response to him being in that tranquil space.

A graduate of Fine Arts from the University of Santo Tomas, Marco “Macoy” Coching is the Grandson of National Artist Francisco V. Coching, the “Dean of Filipino Illustrators”. Macoy took on a different approach in terms of his visual storytelling, and his signature flowing elements are a presentation of the artist’s conceptual take on luminous hues and abstracted forms.
