The Philippines is starting to heat up as the summer months approach. And while many Filipinos are eagerly waiting to dip their toes into the pools and beaches to beat the heat, precautions should be taken to ensure that the skin is protected from the harmful effects of the sun.

Health and beauty retailer Watsons launched its Summer Fun Madness campaign on March 3 with over 2000 SKUs from upwards of 100 brands participating in the promotion.

During the campaign which will run until May, buyers will be able to get discounts and freebies on summer skincare must-haves such as sunscreens, moisturizes, and soothing gels and balms that alleviate symptoms of sun overexposure.

“As we mark the beginning of the summer season, we hope everyone’s more excited than ever to stay protected, fresh, and glowing with Watsons—the ultimate destination for all your summer essentials. Whether your adventure needs sun care or any other beauty must-haves to make you summer-ready, Watsons is your go-to stopover for everything,” said Sharon Decapia, Watsons senior assistant vice-president for marketing communications, PR, and sustainability.

Dra. Loren Cole Magpantay of One World Skin & Wellness, the dermatological clinic partner of Watsons, shared that proper sun protection is key to preventing a host of skin problems down the line.

The most immediate benefit is protection from sunburn caused by excessive sun exposure. It also minimizes the risk of painful skin damage from UV rays. In the longer term, regular sunscreen use also prevents premature aging which can result in wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots which result from long-term UV exposure over the course of many years.

Finally, it lowers the risk of skin cancer due to the sunscreen blocking UV radiation which could penetrate deep into the skin, affecting healthy cells which could lead to cancerous growths.

Magpantay also noted that sunscreen and skincare products come in different forms and these types should be used for different skin types. Some products are better absorbed by oily and acne-prone skin due to their composition while other products can have ingredients that address issues found in dry and combination skin types.

Whatever product a customer fancies, there are some guidelines that Watsons suggested to ensure that their effects are maximized.

A sunscreen should offer broad-spectrum protection to block both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreens should also be rated at least SPF 30 for daily use and SPF 50 for instances of prolonged sun exposure. The products should also be reapplied every two hours, using a liberal amount to maintain its protective benefits.

The summer sun can be an energizing backdrop for fun activities but it also comes with its share of drawbacks. Protective skincare ensures that people can enjoy the summer days with friends and family while minimizing the harmful effects of the sun on the skin.
