The ongoing pandemic is now impacting women’s mental and physical health. Global studies find that women and girls gained weight during the lockdown, were less active, suffered from poor sleep, and experienced increased stress and anxiety. Research further shows that even short-term physical inactivity has long-lasting repercussions.
This has led the Women in Sports of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to present a campaign to encourage women and girls to rise up and shape up by way of solo exercising through dance.
ALMOST 300 participants recently joined Zumbarangay Pilipinas Solo Exercise On-Cam Challenge, recording their solo dance performances to the tune of the original exercise music “Igalaw galaw Ating Katawan.”
This nationwide exercise campaign, organized by the Women in Sports of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), has received entries from the barangay level across its four categories: Women Frontliners, Women Open, Girls Open, and LGBTQ.
The entries were judged based on presentation (forms and style), movement (vigor and energy), as well as creativity and originality. The contest has qualifying levels.
The panel of judges for the city/town level were Stephanie Sabalo, a celebrity and international multi-medalist dance sport athlete; Chris Beltran, an international and award-winning choreographer; Michiko Aseron, a dance faculty at the College of Human Kinetics of the University of the Philippines-Diliman; Lenlen Ruis, a certified AFAA group exercise instructor; and Bam Mogato, an American Council on Exercise-certified fitness instructor.
