Farm-to-can fruit juices provide full health benefits

The wide variety of Philippines fruits has contributed largely to the development of a vibrant fruit juice industry. But, not all fruit juices are equal. Some are made from concentrate while others do not use the freshest fruits available.

Del Monte’s 100 percent pineapple juice has been a perennial favorite of many drinkers, being the trusted brand and the juice of choice among many for almost a hundred years. The pineapples are handpicked from its 30,000-hectare plantation in Bukidnon; immediately tested for quality and ripeness to ensure only the best of the harvest are prepared for juicing.  Then, these are transported to the nearby manufacturing facility in Cagayan de Oro. This farm-to-can process ensures the rich flavor and consistency of the Del Monte’s pineapple juice. In contrast, other fruit juices are made through the reconstitution process that involves mixing fruit concentrates and water, which may diminish the purity of the juice.

According to Dr. Celeste Tanchoco, country director of the International Life Science Institute (ILSI) – Southeast Asia Region Philippine Committee, Inc., and former chief science research specialist at the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), drinking fruit juices made through the farm-to-can method is similar to enjoying its freshly-pressed counterpart.

Dr. Tanchoco explains that with 100 percent pineapple juice, you get the full, fresh flavor straight from the fruit’s natural water with nothing diluted or artificial.

There are also the health benefits. A farm-to-can juice also has more health benefits.  Tanchoco says it is packed with more essential vitamins and minerals as freshly-pressed juice, making it a far superior choice to fruit-flavored drinks or those made from concentrates.

Del Monte’s 100 percent pineapple juice contains vitamins A, C, and E to support the immune system, fiber to aid digestion, and minerals like magnesium, iron, calcium, and zinc for that added health boost. It’s a fat-free and cholesterol-free food/drink with no sugar added.

This pure pineapple juice contains bioactive compounds, known as phytochemicals that have antioxidant properties. Some of these are: flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolic acids,” added Tanchoco.
