The Trembling Tarsier, written by Michellan Sarile-Alagao and illustrated by Enid Din, offers young readers and their parents a touching story that highlights the power of mindfulness and emotional connection.

This 32-page children’s book is a heartfelt exploration of anxiety presented through the eyes of a tiny, trembling tarsier.

Set in the lush, tropical rainforests of the Philippines, The Trembling Tarsier tells the story of a little tarsier struggling to sleep due to noisy tourists. Her mother, a calming presence, guides her through a simple “5-4-3-2-1” grounding exercise using her five senses, helping the young tarsier find peace and comfort.

Its author Michellan Sarile-Alagao said, “I wanted this book to serve as a tool for parents and children to explore healthy ways to manage difficult emotions like anxiety. It’s not only a story but a guide to calming down through love and mindfulness.”

Sarile-Alagao is a dedicated advocate for child rights and mental health. She has over a decade of experience in the non-profit sector. Her previous book, The Sad Cat (2022), also dealt with themes of emotional wellbeing for children. She was one of the Graphic Salute awardees at the 2024 Nick Joaquin Literary Awards in the Philippines.

The book is illustrated by Enid Din, an illustrator known for her intricate, nostalgic artwork that brings stories to life. Her fascination with the small wonders of everyday life is evident in her illustrations for The Trembling Tarsier.

Acclaimed psychologist Adrianne Alvarez, co-founder of Mental Health Hour Manila, said of the book, “This story beautifully portrays the bond between a mother and her daughter. They navigate anxiety together with love, empathetic listening, and practical mindfulness techniques. It’s an empowering read for young children.”

The book’s gentle prose and Din’s captivating illustrations make this a perfect tool for parents and educators alike, especially in an age where mindfulness and emotional intelligence are increasingly recognized as critical skills for children.
