IN the words of ace Ginebra import Justin Brownlee, San Miguel Beer was simply too much with reigning eight-time PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez doing the work.
More importantly, Marcio Lassiter’s early shooting barrage spelled the big difference in the Beermen’s 131-82 beatdown of the suddenly sluggish Kings in their Group B duel in the Governors’ Cup two nights back.
“San Miguel had a great game. They played incredibly well. Congratulations to Marcio for breaking the three-point record. It seemed like he got them going early and the whole team just kinda rode that momentum,” Brownlee said. “They played very well. It was hard to contain them on the defensive side.
“June Mar and CJ, they’re all around. Hopefully, we can bounce back after this game,” he added.
The stunning 49-point loss was Ginebra’s biggest losing margin in franchise history and Kings coach Tim Cone’s worst defeat.
In contrast, it was SMB’s biggest winning lead in its existence that pushed the Beermen to the solo group lead with a 6-2 mark and avenged a 102-108 setback to Ginebra when they first met in the first round last Aug. 27.
The 6-foot-5 Brownlee notched a career-high 51 points in that tiff, but his usually fiery guns were limited to just 16 markers although he had 11 rebounds and six assists.
The Kings saw their four-game winning run come to a screeching halt for a 5-3 card behind the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (5-2) and SMB (6-2).
“We lost some big games in the past to San Miguel and to other teams. I’m not sure if that’s the biggest one but I’m sure it’s going to be close (to their biggest loss). Like I said, a lot of credit to San Miguel,” Brownlee said. “They came out and played their A-plus game tonight.”
