AMD chief named CEO of the Year

LISA Su, CEO of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), has been named TIME’s 2024 CEO of the Year, recognizing her transformative leadership in the semiconductor industry. Since assuming the role in 2014, Su has guided AMD from financial struggles to a position where its market value now surpasses that of Intel. Under her direction, AMD’s stock has increased nearly 50-fold, and the company has significantly expanded its share in the CPU market, powering major data centers and AI applications.

In a conversation with TIME’s Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs over YouTube, Su discussed the importance of both competition and collaboration in the semiconductor industry, emphasizing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI). She anticipates that recent investments will lead to advanced chip production shifting to the U.S. within the next three to five years, enhancing domestic capabilities in response to global supply chain challenges.

Su’s ambitious goal-setting, investment in talent, and a relentless drive for innovation AMD a leader in many semiconductor spaces despite facing intense competition from rivals like Nvidia and Intel, as well as geopolitical tensions affecting chip manufacturing, she remains optimistic about AMD’s future growth.
