MORE Filipinos on board the learning platform Coursera, Inc. want to train on generative AI (GenAI) and have a growing preference for role-specific content tailored to job preparation.
The increasing importance of AI proficiency is underscored by findings from Microsoft’s Work Trend Index 2024. The report indicates that 70 percent of Filipino companies would not hire candidates without AI skills, and 68 percent expressed a preference for less experienced candidates equipped with AI knowledge over more experienced applicants lacking such skills.
Coursera recorded an impressive enrollment rate in GenAI courses, with a learner in the Philippines signing up for GenAI-related content every 15 minutes in 2024.
“Filipino learners embraced the future of work in 2024, prioritizing GenAI and job-aligned, mission-critical skills to stay competitive in an evolving job market. Their progress amidst GenAI’s disruption shows their resilience, adaptability, and drive to lead on a global stage,” Raghav Gupta, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Coursera said in a press statement.
The growth of GenAI learning in the country has been staggering, with a ninefold increase in enrollments throughout the year, according to the report. Courses such as Google AI Essentials, Generative AI for Everyone, and Generative AI: Introduction and Applications were among the most popular offerings. While foundational courses in generative AI continue to attract learners, the emphasis has shifted toward workplace applications, reflecting a practical focus on integrating AI into professional environments.
In addition to AI, Filipino learners explored digital marketing, project management, and data analytics. Language learning also topped the list with courses like ‘First Step Korean’ and ‘Learning How to Learn’ highlighting the importance of both personal development and professional advancement. Entry-level Professional Certificates, which do not require prior experience or a college degree, also gained momentum. Over 70 percent of the most popular courses are tied to industry-recognized micro-credentials, making them valuable tools for career readiness.
“In 2025, we expect the global race toward AI literacy to further accelerate, and we remain committed to empowering Filipino learners with accessible and transformative education for success in the AI-powered world,” Gupta concluded.
