POLICE operatives arrested a sub-leader of the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf wanted for kidnapping and other cases in Jolo town in Sulu last Wednesday.

The suspect, Abubakar Abdulkadil, alias Basai Nuran Basaron, was nabbed in Barangay San Raymundo, the PNP’s public information office said yesterday.

Abdulkadil, 35, was arrested by operatives of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and PNP Special Action Force by virtue of arrest warrants for kidnapping-for-ransom, murder and homicide.

Police said Abdulkadil was involved in the kidnapping of foreigners and Filipinos over the years.

He was also allegedly involved in the bombing of the Jolo Cathedral in January 2019 that left 21 people dead and in twin bombings in Jolo in August 2020 that claimed 14 lives.

The PNP also announced yesterday the arrest of Ricardo Romero, who is facing five counts of qualified rape, in Pantukan town in Davao de Oro last Wednesday.

Romero, 41, yielded a cal. 45 pistol, a magazine, six rounds of ammunition, and an improvised marble gun.

PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. attributed the two accomplishments to the synergy of the police, church and community under the Kasimbayanan (Kapulisan, Simbahan at Pamayanan) program.

“Let’s help one another towards making our community a safer place to live in. Our PNP personnel are determined to fulfill their mission with the help of the stakeholders,” said Azurin.
