IN THE face of relentless and sophisticated cyberattacks, companies recognize that protecting their assets requires a well-trained and constantly evolving cybersecurity workforce. Thus, the amount of investments made is seen as miniscule compared to the safety and peace-of-mind companies get.

A recent Kaspersky study underscores this trend, finding that a significant majority of businesses invest heavily in upskilling their cybersecurity teams. However, the research also highlights a crucial point: financial investment alone isn’t enough. To truly strengthen an organization’s defenses, businesses need to prioritize quality training that keeps pace with the rapidly changing threat landscape.

The study revealed that over 70 percent of companies are allocating more than $100,000 annually for additional cybersecurity training. This substantial financial commitment illustrates the growing recognition that employee expertise is a cornerstone of cyber resilience. However, it’s crucial to remember that not all training is created equal. Companies face a challenge in finding courses that address the latest threats and vulnerabilities, highlighting a need for the educational market to adapt quickly.

Even with access to relevant courses, a concerning issue remains: knowledge retention.  Many practitioners feel that information from training fades if they lack the opportunity to directly apply the new skills. This emphasizes the need for training that goes beyond theory, offering hands-on simulations and opportunities to practice in realistic scenarios.

A striking 39 percent of cybersecurity professionals believe corporate training falls short of their needs. This reveals a workforce eager to stay ahead of the curve. Many are even willing to invest their own funds in further professional development. Companies would be wise to harness this drive for knowledge, supporting employees in finding advanced training opportunities that not only benefit the individual but also enhance the company’s overall cybersecurity posture.

To maximize the return on their investment in training, Kaspersky offers clear guidance saying that focusing on high-quality courses with a strong focus on practical applications is crucial for ensuring skills are effectively learned and retained. Its experts add that interactive simulations–almost game playing, not just role playing–can replicate realistic cybersecurity scenarios, allowing employees to test their decision-making abilities under pressure. Moreover, having insightful threat intelligence provides teams with current threat intelligence data empowers them to understand emerging attack methods and proactively identify risks.
